Jobs and Technology

Jobs are on my mind. Everyone is willing to share their job experience when you first meet them. There is something in each of us that is proud to share about our work.
Jobs have become less physical with each generation. New technological developments have changed the way we work. However, there’s still a need for a shovel even though a machine dug the bulk of the ditch. We have replaced most jobs that have made us sweat; this happened as a result of the era called the industrial revolution.
We now live in an age of technology that makes it possible to work from home, thus leaving many office buildings empty. The Covid pandemic a few years ago, indicated this was possible due to the computer which functions most places.
This computer technology has created many new jobs, which we never thought about before. I remember a statement made as we entered into this new era of technology – less paperwork. This has not come true. In fact, we have more paperwork. The question is, “do we feel more secure with paper in hand as compared to a screen printout?
The new age is upon us – AI – or Artificial Intelligence is a new concept that takes us to a new world. To be replaced by a machine that thinks like a human to me is frightening. It appears to me that AI can do intellectual activities. However, it lacks human emotions, but this may come in the near future.
We have experienced a cultural lag with each scientific development. All kinds of social problems have developed during this computer era. Our system is constantly playing catch up with new laws governing the use of derivatives of the computer. Recently, in order to be a step ahead of AI, the State and Federal governments have discussed passing a moratorium on AI. The idea being eliminating social problems we now experience with modern-day technology.
I think of the simpler life of one of my first jobs cutting grass at an estate using an iron tire rotary blade. Hot summer days and much perspiration! With today’s technology, the mower is pre-programmed to cut lawns requiring no personal touch. Your “clicker” can control it from a distance…no more sweat!
