Nursing Assistant Training

What is a Nursing Assistant?

If you are looking to make a difference in the lives of others, a Nursing Assistant path could be right for you. Nursing Assistants are an essential part of the healthcare team; the position serves as a fulfilling career for some and the next step to different healthcare careers for others. Each day you will engage with residents, helping them to have purposeful and fulfilling days. You will get to know the residents well by assisting them with their activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, and dressing.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Path

You'll receive 80 hours of training through our partner Scrubs Academy. After completing the course, you'll be eligible to take the CNA examination which Good Shepherd pays for. To enroll in the program, you'll need to be at least 16 years of age, have the ability to complete the independent study within the set timeframe, and be able to attend all class dates without exception. Prospective students should complete an application. There will be no cost for the class or certification. Classroom time (excluding independent study and state exam) is compensated at a rate of $15.75/HR. Upon completion of the program and successful state certification, students will begin working as Certified Nursing Assistants in our Skilled Nursing Facility and be compensated at a rate of $19.50/HR.

Home Health Aide (HHA) Path

You'll receive 80 hours of training through our partner Scrubs Academy. To enroll in the program, you'll need to be at least 18 years of age, have the ability to complete the independent study within the set timeframe, and be able to attend all class dates without exception. Prospective students should complete an application. There will be no cost for the class. Classroom time (excluding independent study) is compensated at a rate of $15.75/HR. Upon completion of the program, students will begin working as Home Health Aides in our Assisted Living/Memory Care areas and be compensated at a rate of $18.50/HR.

What’s the Difference Between CNA and HHA?

Certified Nursing Assistants and Home Health Aides both complete the same 80-hour Nursing Assistant Course. Once the class is complete, Nursing Assistants over the age of 18 are eligible to begin working as Home Health Aides in our Assisted Living and Memory Care areas.

Those Nursing Assistants who want to work in our Skilled Nursing Facility or are under the age of 18 must take the Minnesota Nursing Assistant state exam to become certified. Once these Nursing Assistants pass the state exam, they become active on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry and are eligible to begin working as Certified Nursing Assistants in our Skilled Nursing Facility.
