More Than Just Fun—The Power of Therapeutic Recreation

More Than Just Fun—The Power of Therapeutic Recreation at Good Shepherd
At Good Shepherd Community, our daily activities are more than just ways to pass the time—they’re opportunities to grow, connect, and thrive. In honor of National Therapeutic Recreation Week (July 11–17), we’re taking a closer look at the purpose behind our engaging events and why they’re so important to the well-being of our residents.
Wellness with Purpose
Through our partnership with Aegis EnerG, each activity offered at Good Shepherd is thoughtfully designed to support the seven facets of wellness:
- Physical – Staying active improves strength, balance, and overall health. Whether it’s EnerG exercises, stretching classes, walking clubs, or kickball, movement is built into each week.
- Emotional – Activities like Color Me Calm, music therapy, and Coffee & Chat create space for relaxation and joy, which supports emotional balance.
- Intellectual – We stimulate the mind with trivia, word games, crafts, and travel talks, encouraging lifelong learning and curiosity.
- Social – Events like Bingo, BBQs with local groups, birthday parties, and group games help foster friendships and a sense of belonging and community.
- Occupational – Residents have opportunities to contribute through clubs, planning groups, or sharing talents during activities, helping maintain purpose and identity.
- Environmental – Programs like Garden Club and Nature’s Therapy connect residents with the outdoors, bringing nature’s calming presence into their daily routines.
- Spiritual – With regular worship services, Rosary, Bible study, and communion, spiritual needs are respected and nurtured.
Celebrating Every Ability
Therapeutic recreation is about meeting people where they are. At every level of care—from our apartments and cottages to our skilled nursing neighborhoods—residents are empowered to participate in meaningful activities tailored to their interests and abilities. You’ll see the joy in the room during a live music performance, the laughter during a game of Pokeno, and the peace during a quiet art project.
Why It Matters
Engaging in purposeful recreation not only brings happiness—it improves health outcomes, enhances cognitive functioning, boosts mood, and increases a sense of control and independence. It’s about helping residents live their best lives, every day.
This July, as we recognize National Therapeutic Recreation Week, we celebrate the dedicated activity teams and caregivers who make each moment count—and the residents who inspire us with their energy, creativity, and spirit.
