Deciding to make the move into a senior living community is a big step—one that comes with mixed emotions. You might feel ready for more support, but feel overwhelmed with the process. You’re not alone. Many seniors feel this way. Luckily, you don’t have to figure it out all at once.

At the Good Shepherd Community, we’ve walked alongside many older adults who have felt overwhelmed with the options. This guide is here to help you take one small, simple step at a time.

1. Start With Your “Why”

Before you look at floor plans or take a tour, take a moment and ask yourself:

  • What would make life easier?
  • What would make daily life more enjoyable?
  • What do I want more of—connection, safety, support, peace of mind?

Your “why” will help you determine important priorities and what to look for when touring.
Maybe you’re tired of shoveling snow or managing home repairs.
Maybe you’re feeling lonely and crave more social time.
Maybe you want the comfort of knowing help is nearby if you need it.
Maybe you’re craving home cooked meals with out the work.

Whatever your reason, it matters and it deserves attention.

2. What Are Your Must‑Haves and Priorities?

Once you understand your “why,” create a short list of your essentials. Think about:

  • Meal options
  • Transportation
  • On‑site events and activities
  • Wellness or medical support
  • Maintenance‑free living
  • Spiritual care
  • Access to outdoor spaces
  • A sense of community and belonging

You don’t need a long list—just the things that matter most to you. Will you have a hard time leaving your garden? Add gardening space to your list. Do you enjoy meeting friends for coffee? Add activities to your list. This clarity helps you compare options with confidence and helps you single out some amenities.

3. Have a Conversation With Family

Family and friends often want to help support you but aren’t sure how. They might feel relieved when you start the conversation. Start with a simple conversation starter such as: “I’ve been thinking about what might make life easier and more enjoyable. I’d love your help exploring some options.” Opening this door early gives everyone time to listen, share, and plan together.

4. Schedule a Tour (Just to Explore)

Most communities understand that you’re looking at all your options. It’s a great way to collect information and find the environment that feels right.

At Good Shepherd Community, many people visit just to:

  • See the spaces
  • Meet a few staff members
  • Get a sense of the atmosphere
  • Ask honest questions
  • Picture themselves in the community

After your tour, write down how you felt there and if they had everything from your must-haves list. Some people take multiple tours. Some bring family or friends. Some come alone. Any approach is perfectly okay.

5. Ask for Help and Take the Next Step—One at a Time

You aren’t expected to know everything about senior living. Our team is here to help you understand your options, timelines, and what the transition could look like.

Whether you’re ready to move soon or just beginning to think about it, we’ll walk with you at your pace, answer your questions, and make the process feel manageable. Everyone’s situation is different, and that’s why we listen first.
