How do I know which level of care is appropriate?

You do not have to figure it out alone. Good Shepherd offers a continuum that includes Senior Housing, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Home Health Care, Short-Term Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care. Our team looks at the person’s goals, daily routine, mobility, medications, memory, safety and personal-care needs to help determine the best fit.

Needs can also change over time. Having several levels of support connected through one organization gives residents and families a trusted place to turn when questions arise.

What does assisted living at Good Shepherd include?

Assisted living is designed to provide support without taking away a person’s independence. Depending on the location and individual plan, services may include meals, housekeeping, laundry, activities, medication management and assistance with bathing, dressing or other daily routines. Each resident is assessed so the plan reflects what they actually need — not a one-size-fits-all package.

How is memory care different from assisted living?

Assisted living supports people who need help with daily routines while encouraging as much independence as possible. Good Shepherd’s memory care is specifically designed for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Residents benefit from dementia-trained staff, familiar routines, purposeful activities and added safety features in an environment built around their changing needs.

Good Shepherd offers memory care in Sauk Rapids and at Shepherd of Grace Community in Becker. Our team can help families understand whether assisted living or specialized memory support may be the better fit.

What is the difference between short-term rehabilitation and long-term care?

Short-term rehabilitation at Good Shepherd is focused on recovery following an illness, injury, hospitalization or surgery. The goal is to help someone regain strength and function so they can return to the safest, most independent setting possible.

Long-term care provides ongoing, 24-hour nursing and personal support for individuals whose needs can no longer be safely met at home or in a less intensive setting. Both services are available on our Sauk Rapids campus, making it easier for families to explore the right level of support.

What should I bring to a senior living tour?

Bring your questions, a list of what matters most and any concerns you would like to discuss. It may also help to have a general medication list, information about daily support needs and an idea of your preferred budget.

During your visit, pay attention to more than the apartment or building. Notice how the community feels. Are residents engaged? What amenities does the building have? Can you picture yourself or your loved one feeling comfortable and at home? A Good Shepherd tour is a conversation, not a commitment, so ask anything that will help you make a confident decision.

When should families begin exploring senior living options?

Ideally, before a crisis happens. Starting early gives older adults a stronger voice in the decision and allows families time to understand Good Shepherd’s locations, services, availability and costs.
