Understanding the Difference Between Senior Living and Assisted Living

Did you know that Senior Living and Assisted Living can sometimes exist in the same community?
At Good Shepherd Community, many people are surprised to learn that our apartment communities in Sauk Rapids and Becker offer both independent senior living opportunities and licensed assisted living services.
While the terms are often used interchangeably, they are not exactly the same. Understanding the difference can help you or a loved one make the best decision for today and for the future.
What Is Senior Living?
Good Shepherd owns and operates two 55+ apartment communities:
- Shepherd Court Apartments in Sauk Rapids
- Good Shepherd Homes, Inc. in Sauk Rapids
- Shepherd Oak Apartments in Sauk Rapids
- Shepherd Oak West Apartments in Sauk Rapids
- Shepherd of Grace Apartments in Becker
These apartment communities are designed for active adults who want the comfort of maintenance-free living while maintaining their independence.
Residents enjoy:
- Private apartments
- A welcoming community atmosphere
- Social and recreational activities
- Opportunities to engage the mind, body, and spirit
- Freedom to come and go as they choose
- Control over their daily schedules and routines
Many residents choose senior living because it allows them to simplify life, enjoy community connections, and spend more time doing the things they love.
What Makes Assisted Living Different?
Both Shepherd Court Apartments and Shepherd of Grace Apartments are licensed as Assisted Living communities by the State of Minnesota.
This means residents can remain in their apartment and add services if and when their needs change.
Assisted Living services are designed to provide additional support while promoting independence. Services are customized to each individual and can be added through a personalized service plan.
Our basic Assisted Living package includes:
- Nurse liaison services
- 24-hour RN on-call support for caregivers
- Awake caregivers on-site 24/7
- Emergency pendant system and response assistance
- Weekly light housekeeping
- Laundry services
- Appointment coordination
- Monthly vital sign monitoring
- Group life enrichment opportunities
Additional personal care services may also be provided based on a nursing assessment and individualized care plan.
The Best of Both Worlds
One of the greatest benefits of choosing a Good Shepherd Community apartment is flexibility.
A resident can move in as a completely independent senior and, if needs change over time, add supportive services without leaving the community they know and love.
It’s a model that provides peace of mind for residents and their families while supporting independence every step of the way.
Did You Know?
At Good Shepherd Community, you don’t have to choose between independence and support. Our residents can enjoy an active, independent lifestyle while having access to Assisted Living services when needed.
