Staying Connected Through the Holidays

The holiday season brings twinkling lights, cherished traditions, and—for many—a mix of emotions. While December can be a joyful time, it can also feel quiet or lonely, especially for seniors living alone or facing limited mobility during Minnesota’s winter weather.
At Good Shepherd Community, we believe every season should be filled with connection, comfort, and care. Here are a few simple ways seniors can take care of themselves and stay engaged through the holidays:
1. Keep a Social Calendar
Even small social moments can make a big difference. Whether it’s a weekly phone call with a friend, a virtual visit with grandkids, or joining a community event, staying socially active helps lift spirits and reduce feelings of isolation.
Try this:
- Schedule a weekly coffee chat (in person or by phone)
- Attend a holiday craft or music event in the community (The Whitney Senior Center has a full calendar of events!)
- Invite a neighbor over for cocoa and conversation
2. Create New Traditions
If old traditions feel out of reach, start new ones that fit your current lifestyle. Decorate a small tree, write holiday cards, or bake a favorite treat to share with others.
Try this:
- Host a “memory moment” where you share stories from holidays past
- Make a gratitude list and reflect on the year
- Watch a classic holiday movie with a friend or caregiver
3. Stay Warm and Well
Winter weather can make it harder to get out and about, but staying physically and emotionally well is key. Bundle up for short walks, enjoy indoor movement, and lean on your care team for support.
Try this:
- Join a gentle exercise class or stretching group
- Keep your home cozy and well-lit
- Ask for help with errands or transportation when needed
4. Reach Out If You’re Feeling Low
It’s okay to feel a little blue during the holidays. What matters most is knowing you’re not alone. Talk to someone—a friend, family member, or staff member—if you’re feeling down. Connection is the best gift of all.
If isolation keeps you from feeling your best in the winter, consider moving into a 55+ community. You can enjoy events, visiting with neighbors, and walking the halls without ever stepping foot in the cold! We invite you to lean into the season with hope, heart, and togetherness.
