The Power of Nursing

Nursing is more than a profession. It is a calling, and at Good Shepherd Community, you can feel that the moment you walk through the doors.
During National Nursing Week May 6 through 12, we take time to recognize the extraordinary impact our nurses and CNAs have on the lives of those they serve. This year’s theme, The Power of Nursing, reflects something we see every single day. It is not just clinical skill, but the quiet, human moments that often go unseen.
At Good Shepherd, nursing is not just about care plans and medications. It is about knowing a resident’s favorite chair, recognizing when something feels off before a chart shows it, and being a steady presence for families navigating difficult transitions.
The Power of Nursing in Critical Care Moments
The power of nursing shows up in both urgent and ordinary moments. It is in the quick response to a change in condition, but just as much in the calm reassurance offered at the bedside.
For those who have had the opportunity to watch our teams in action, what stands out is not just their clinical expertise. It is how they carry themselves. There is a quiet confidence, a teamwork dynamic, and a genuine care for the people they serve that is hard to teach and impossible to fake.
Our RNs, LPNs, CNAs, and Home Health Aides provide hands on, highly attentive care that protects dignity and quality of life. They are often the first to notice subtle changes, the ones advocating behind the scenes, and the ones who bring a sense of calm into situations that can feel overwhelming.
One example of this dedication is Michelle, RN and Director of Home Health Care at Good Shepherd Community.
Michelle’s journey into nursing did not begin in a classroom. It began at the bedside. She started as an aide while working her way through school, steadily advancing her education from LPN to RN, then earning her Bachelor’s degree and ultimately a Master of Science in Nursing Education. Her career spans long term care and more than two decades in home health care, bringing both depth and perspective to the work she leads today.
Education has always been central to Michelle’s purpose. For over 20 years, she has served as a nursing instructor and state examiner, helping shape the next generation of caregivers. She believes strongly that investing in future nurses is essential to ensuring older adults continue to receive the quality care they deserve.
What draws Michelle most to home health care is the connection. She values the one to one time with clients, meeting them where they are, both physically and emotionally, and supporting them in the place they most want to be, home. It is, in her words, the truest form of person centered care.
“Serving older adults gives me great pleasure, fills my bucket, and gives me the energy to succeed in life.”
Mission Driven Nursing with Purpose
At Good Shepherd Community, our mission is lived out in very real ways each day. Our nurses care for the whole person, body, mind, and spirit, and they do so with service, compassion, trust, and respect.
What makes this place different is the connection. Many of our nurses build lasting relationships with residents and families. They celebrate milestones, offer comfort in difficult moments, and become trusted faces in people’s daily lives.
This is not just a workplace. It is a community.
That commitment is especially evident in our Memory Care Cottages, where both our Becker and Sauk Rapids campuses provide 24 hour on site nursing care. This level of support ensures residents receive consistent, attentive care in an environment designed specifically for comfort, dignity, and specialized memory support.
A Rewarding Profession
A meaningful nursing career is one where people feel supported, valued, and seen, not just during Nurses Week, but all year long.
At Good Shepherd, we are committed to investing in our caregivers in ways that matter. That includes strong benefits, flexibility, and opportunities for growth. Just as importantly, it includes a culture where people look out for one another.
We know this work is not easy. It requires resilience, empathy, and a deep sense of purpose. What we see from our team every day is a level of dedication that goes far beyond a job description.

And at Good Shepherd, that power is felt every day.
